Three Gates Media

The second time I made it to Japan was 2014, 6 years after my first trip.  A lot had happened in that time.   I still took several rolls of film which haven't been developed.  This essay begins in the Tsukiji Fish Market.  It's the biggest fish market in the world and it is quite shocking to see the sheer volume of sea creatures passing through every day, some of which I have never seen before.  The market has occupied this site since 1935 but will be moving next year to make way for the Olympics in 2020.

Three Gates Media

Having a conversation with anyone at Symbiotica is challenging.  One moment you're talking about what you had for breakfast, the next you're discussing growing steak in the lab and the ethics of eating it.  The Symbioticans were generous with their time and their ideas and I hope you enjoy this brief moment in their world as they try to help us make sense of ours.

Three Gates Media

A visit to the home of artist Evi Ferrier is an overwhelming and wonderful experience.  She will walk you around each room, stopping every now and then to light a candle or two.  She barely notices the floor to ceiling gallery crowding around her.  My first (and almost only) words in the hour I spent there were: Or you could just hang ALL the pictures.

Three Gates Media

We met Mick Malone in his library, or house... it was difficult to tell which with floor to ceiling books on every available wall.  He is a man who makes you feel like family.  From the first moment he takes a strong hold of your hand and then pulls you in for the hug.  He'll even throw in a loving insult like: I've seen more meat on a butcher's pencil.

Three Gates Media

It was a blue moon the night we went to see Rebecca Millman.  The audience, seated on plastic chairs in a local community hall, were reserved however each one had come for their own reasons.  The stories were fascinating.
